How to Run a Static Structural Analysis in ANSYS Mechanical — Beginner’s Guide

If you’re just starting with FEA, Static Structural analysis is the perfect place to begin. Here’s the exact step-by-step workflow I followed.

Step 1 — Open ANSYS & Start a Project Open ANSYS Workbench. Double-click Static Structural from the left menu. Rename the project or leave it as default.

Step 2 — Define Your Material Double-click Engineering Data. Click Create New Material, then add properties like Density and Young’s Modulus from the left panel. Close Engineering Data when done.

Step 3 — Import or Create Geometry Right-click Geometry to import an existing file, or double-click to open SpaceClaim and model from scratch.

Step 4 — Check Analysis Settings In the top ribbon, go to View → Properties. Confirm the analysis is set to 3D.

Step 5 — Create the Mesh Double-click Model to open Mechanical. Mesh your geometry — use finer mesh for complex shapes, coarser for simple ones.

Step 6 — Apply Boundary Conditions Add Fixed Support and your load (Force, Pressure, etc.) as needed.

Step 7 — Add Result Outputs & Solve Insert Total Deformation and Equivalent Von Mises Stress in the Solution branch. Click Solve.

Step 8 — Review Results Analyse your deformation and stress values. Check if the design is safe.
