Engineering Reference Notes

IS 1363 (Part 3) / ISO 4034 — Grade C

  • Scope: M5 to M64, Steel only
  • Thread tolerance: 7H (ISO 4759-1)
  • Product Grade: C
  • Chamfer angle β: 15° to 30°
  • Mating bolts: IS 1363 (Part 1/2), ISO 4016/4018
  • d≤M16 → Class 5; M16<d≤M39 → Class 4/4.5

IS 1364 (Part 3) / ISO 4032 — Grade A/B

  • Scope: M1.6 to M64, Steel / SS / Non-ferrous
  • Thread tolerance: 6H (tighter than Grade C)
  • Grade A for d≤M16; Grade B for d>M16
  • Steel M3–M39: Class 6, 8, 10
  • SS: A2-70 / A4-70 (d≤M24); A2-50 / A4-50 (M24<d≤M39)
  • Mating bolts: IS 1364 (Part 1/2), ISO 4014/4017

DIN 934 — Grade A/B

  • Scope: M1 to M160, Steel / SS / Non-ferrous
  • Thread tolerance: 6H
  • ⚠ M10 s=17mm, M12 s=19mm, M22 s=32mm (differs from ISO 4032!)
  • Recommended for new designs: use ISO 4032/DIN 970 instead
  • Steel M3–M39: Class 6, 8, 10
  • m′ = minimum wrenching height (0.8m min)

ASME B18.2.2-2022 — Inch Series

  • Scope: UNC/UNF, inch dimensions
  • Thread Class: 2B (ASME B1.1)
  • NOT interchangeable with metric threads
  • Steel: ASTM A563 or SAE J995
  • SS: ASTM F594; Non-ferrous: ASTM F467
  • QA per ASME B18.18
Critical Dimension Difference: DIN 934 uses M10 s=17mm, M12 s=19mm, M22 s=32mm. ISO 4032 / IS 1364 uses M10 s=16mm, M12 s=18mm, M22 s=34mm. Do NOT mix Grade C and Grade A/B in the same joint.
// ─ WEIGHT (s=width across flats, m=thickness, d=nominal diameter, ρ=density) ─
A_hex = (√3 / 2) × s² // hexagonal cross-section [mm²]
A_bore = π × (d / 2)² // thread bore [mm²]
Volume = (A_hex − A_bore) × m // net volume [mm³]
Weight = Volume × ρ × 10⁻⁶ // grams (ρ in kg/m³)

// ─ BEARING AREA (d_w from standard table) ──────────────────────────────
A_b = (π / 4) × (d_w² − d²) // [mm²] — use d_w min (conservative)
σ_b = F / A_b // bearing stress [N/mm²]; F in Newtons

⚠ Add 1–3% for chamfer/washer face. Procurement tolerance: 3–5%. Zinc plating adds ~0.4–0.6mm (see ISO 4042).

IS 1363 (Part 3) / ISO 4034 (Section 5)

  • Hexagon nut — IS 1363 (Part 3)/ISO 4034 — M12 — 5
  • Format: product · standard · size · property class
  • Per Alteration notice in IS 1363 (Part 3):2002

IS 1364 (Part 3) / ISO 4032 (Section 5)

  • Hexagon nut - IS 1364 (Part 3)/ISO 4032 - M12 - 8
  • Per Alteration notice in IS 1364 (Part 3):2002
  • Add material (SS/NF) if not carbon steel

DIN 934 (Section 4)

  • Hexagon nut DIN 934 — M12 — 8
  • Add "— A" for Grade A if d ≥ M16
  • Example: Hexagon nut DIN 934 — M20 — 8 — A
  • Add "AU" suffix for free-cutting steel

ASME B18.2.2 (Section 3.13.1)

  • Hex Nut, ASME B18.2.2, 1/2-13, ASTM A563 Grade A, Steel, Plain
  • Format: product · standard · size-TPI · mechanical std · material · finish

Min Thread Engagement (General)

  • Steel-in-steel: minimum 0.8 × d
  • Steel-in-cast iron: minimum 1.0 × d
  • Steel-in-aluminium: minimum 1.5 × d
  • Standard hex nut m ≈ 0.8d (adequate for steel)
  • Verify per IS 4218 / ISO 965 for thread data

Surface Finishes

  • As-processed (default for Grade C/A/B)
  • Electro zinc plated — ISO 4042 / IS 1367-11
  • Hot-dip galvanized — ISO 1461 (oversize tap needed)
  • Zinc flake (Dacromet) — ISO 10683
  • ASME: Electroplated per ASTM F1941
  • Black oxide — phosphate + oil

Mating Bolt Standards

  • IS 1363 (Part 1): Grade C hex bolts
  • IS 1364 (Part 1/2): Grade A/B bolts/screws
  • ISO 4016 / ISO 4018 — Grade C bolts
  • ISO 4014 / ISO 4017 — Grade A/B bolts
  • DIN 931 / DIN 933 — hex bolts (Grade A/B)
  • ASTM A307 / A325 / A490 — US bolts

Drawing Callout Tips

  • Use full designation from Section 5 (see above)
  • Add finish suffix: e.g. "…M12 — 5 — Zn" (IS)
  • For BOM: quantity, designation, material, finish
  • Preferred sizes recommended for new designs
  • Specify coating thickness for critical clearances
  • Mark property class on bearing face
